Situated to the north of the Himalayan barrier, Mt. Kailash (6,740m.) is wholly within Tibet. It is the abode of Lord Shiva and his divine better-half Parvati. Mt. Kailash has been recognized as one of the most important pilgrim centers for both the Hindus and the Buddhists. Besides, Jains also acknowledge Kailash as ashtapada and padma harda. They believe that Guru Nanak meditated in this holy mountain. Buddhists believe that Demchook( the fierceful form of Buddha) seated on the summit of Mount Kailash for meditation. In the Vedas, the oldest book in the world's library as well, we find the reference of Kailash. The importance of Mt. Kailash is also mentioned in the Puranas, the holy book of Hindus. It is said that Mansarovar is created by Brahma. Emperor Mandhata in Golden Age, Ravana, Bhasmasura and other in the Silver Age did penance to propitiate Lord Shiva in Mansarovar. It is claimed that those who take the holy dip at Mansarovar and carry out Parikrama around Kailash are absolved of their sins through generations and is absorbed into the Supreme Finality.
It is the perfect mountain with awesome beauty, with 4 great faces. It is called Khang Rimpoche (Precious Jewel of Snow) to Tibetans and they see it as the navel of the world. It is generally believed that a stream from the mountain pours into a nearby lake and the four rivers flow in the four cardinal directions. The River of the Lion Mouth to the North, the River of the Horse Mouth to the east, the River of the Peacock Mouth to the south and the River of the Elephant Mouth to the West. Strangely enough, four major rivers do indeed originate near Kailash, the Indus, the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra), the Karnali and the Sutlej. Tibetans believe that their great poet & saint Jechun Milarepa spent several years for meditation in this holy place.
