Trip Information

Damodar Kunda is a sacred and remote pilgrimage site in the Mustang region of Nepal. It is a high-altitude lake situated at an elevation of about 5,400 meters (17,717 feet) above sea level. The trek to Damodar Kunda offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains, unique landscapes, and a chance to explore the traditional Tibetan culture of the Mustang region.

Here’s some general information about the Damodar Kunda trek:

Trek Difficulty: The Damodar Kunda trek is considered a challenging and strenuous trek, primarily due to the high altitude and rugged terrain. Trekkers should have prior trekking experience and be physically fit to undertake this journey.

Permits: Like many other treks in Nepal, you will need permits to enter the Mustang region. As of my last update, you required both the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Mustang.

Best Time to Trek: The best time to undertake the Damodar Kunda trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer stable weather conditions and clear skies, providing excellent views of the mountains.

Trek Duration: The duration of the Damodar Kunda trek can vary depending on the specific route taken, but it typically takes around 18 to 20 days to complete the trek. This includes the trekking days and some buffer days for acclimatization and unforeseen circumstances.

Trek Itinerary: The typical itinerary for the Damodar Kunda trek may include starting from Jomsom, passing through Lo Manthang, and then trekking to Damodar Kunda before returning via the same route.

Altitude Sickness: Since the trek involves reaching high altitudes, it’s crucial to acclimatize properly. Trekkers should be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness and ascend gradually to allow their bodies to adjust to the thin air.

Guides and Porters: It’s advisable to hire a licensed guide and/or porter to accompany you on the trek. A guide can provide valuable insights, handle permits and logistics, and ensure your safety during the journey.

Accommodation: Along the trekking route, there are basic teahouses and lodges providing accommodation and meals for trekkers. However, as the trek is relatively remote, facilities might be more basic compared to other popular trekking regions in Nepal.

Please note that trekking conditions and regulations may change over time, so it’s essential to double-check the most up-to-date information with a reliable trekking agency or the Nepal Tourism Board before planning your trip.

As of my last update, Damodar Kunda was a less-visited destination, but its spiritual significance and natural beauty made it an attractive trekking option for those seeking a unique and off-the-beaten-path adventure in Nepal.
