Introduction

Responding to a joint press conference, with several senior officers from the Chinese government and the Consular General of Nepal in Tibet, an announcement was made that the Rasuwagadi-Kerung border crossing, the only functioning border linking Nepal to China’s autonomous region Tibet, is now open to foreign travellers as well who wish to travel to Kailash via the “new overland route”.  Issued by the Consulate General of Nepal, this major border, which is now open, moderates the travelling distance for pilgrims from all around the world. Since it ceases the compulsion to enter Tibet via flights, this tour has made Mt. Kailash easily accessible from the outskirts of Nepal.

After the closure of the Kodari border due to heavy damages received since the 2015 earthquake, this alternative route benefits the travellers who yearn to embark on a journey sans the flight hassle. Everest Expeditions Nepal introduces the Overland Kailash Tour via Kerung, a 14 days Yatra from Kathmandu via Kerung, Saga, Mansarovar, Darchen and Kailash. The Kerung border is located 175 km from Kathmandu and lies in the Rasuwagadi district of Nepal. Due to narrow and basic road construction, it is feasible to estimate that it takes around 8-9 hours from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi via Timure. Kerung is elevated around 3,000 meters height and staying one day for acclimatization assists to alter your body in high altitude. From Kerung, we take scenic drive to the villages of Saga, Mansarovar and Darchen with picturesque Mount Kailash surroundings and beautiful Tibetan settlements.

Our well-prepared itinerary has been crafted according to our client’s requirements from acclimatization to accommodation to transportation, food and other needful information. Our experienced cook provides the best of Vegetarian Indian meals and the staff of Everest Expeditions Nepal  will ensure to make you trip a successful and memorable one.

Q1. Can I use Credit Card and ATM during the Trek? What currency is used?

Tibet’s official currency is the Yuan, but other currencies such as the US dollar, Euro, and British pound are also accepted. However, before traveling to Tibet, we recommend exchanging your money for Yuan. If you’re coming in through Kathmandu, change your money at any of the city’s money exchanges. You can also exchange money or use ATMs in Lhasa if you arrive from mainland China. Because finding ATMs or banks in rural areas of Tibet is difficult, it is recommended that you bring CASH with you to cover all of your expenses. Please consult your travel agency to determine how much you should carry for the trip, as it is dependent on your trip package.

Q2.What can be the best time for the Kailash Yatra?

The optimum time to visit Mount Kailash is from April until the end of September, while the greatest time to tour central Tibet is from November to December. From early November to early April, extreme weather changes make travel to Everest Base Camp problematic; also, throughout the winter season, roads in eastern Tibet, particularly around Mt Kailash and western Tibet, may be closed owing to heavy snowfall.

Q3.What is the altitude during the Kailash Kora?

The three-day Kailash Parikrama is the most difficult part of the Mount Kailash Tour. Darchen is the starting point for the 52-kilometer trip (4,560m). You pass through Lha-Chu Valley, Lham-Chu Valley, Dzong-Chu Valley, and Darchen. You would spend one night in Dirapuk Monastery and the next in Zuthulpuk Monastery during the Kailash Kora. The Kora around Kailash Mountain has an average altitude of roughly 5,000 meters, and the average daily walk is about 7 to 8 hours. Every pilgrim who travels to Kailash to complete the Kailash Kora walks clockwise around the Kailash Mountain, passing via the highest pass, Dolma La. (5645m).
